Self-esteem and self-confidence

Lack of self-esteem and self-confidence are major problems for many people. There are many causes for low self-esteem and self-confidence and there are varying degrees of severity.

Although we often talk about them in the same sentence, self-esteem and self-confidence are two different things. Self-esteem is confidence in one's own worth and abilities while confidence is an individual's trust of their own abilities, capabilities and judgements.

Low self-esteem often starts in childhood where we are given negative messages about ourselves from important people in our lives such as teachers, friends, siblings or parents. The message may be given with good intent but is stored as being that we are not good enough. When self-esteem is low we struggle to deal with the challenges that life throws at us and we see ourselves and our lives in a more negative light. The good news is that hypnotherapy can help turn this around and help make us feel happier about ourselves and to feel better able to take on life's challenges. We will work together to identify the negative beliefs you have about yourself and challenge them in our hypnotherapy sessions.

Possible occasions where you might be experiencing low self-confidence could be: when you are facing an exam, waiting to take your driving test, having to speak in public eg. a wedding speech, or when you are facing an interview. I can help you with all of these issues or any other situation that is causing you low self-confidence.

There are many ways in which you can deal with low self-esteem and low self-confidence at home which I have listed below, but hypnotherapy is also an effective method in dealing with low self-esteem and low self-confidence. We store all of our values and opinions in our sub-conscious and hypnotherapy is a therapy where we can access the sub-conscious mind and re-set those beliefs that need re-setting.

For most cases, just two or three sessions of hypnotherapy would be required to deal with any self-esteem and self-confidence issues but there may be occasions when one or two more sessions may be required.

Ways to deal with low self-esteem at home

  • Recognise and make a note of all the things you are good at. We enjoy doing things we are good at so by doing some of the things listed, you will enhance your mood.

  • Be kind and patient with yourself. Take care of yourself.

  • You might find that there are people around you who don't make you feel good about yourself and if that is the case you might find that not being in contact with them so much makes you feel slightly happier or you could approach them and talk to them about the way their words and actions make you feel. Seek out people who make you feel good about yourself.

  • Know that it is ok to say no to people and to situations. Doing things we do not want to do can make us feel angry and resentful of ourselves. It's ok to say no sometimes.

  • Give yourself a goal or set yourself a challenge, something that you will enjoy doing.
